"PRISCILLA"’S STORY OF SPOUSAL ABUSE

In 1988, "Priscilla" married "Peter" a Canadian citizen. Following their marriage in Priscilla’s country of birth, "Peter" sponsored "Priscilla" to Canada as his spouse. In 1992, "Priscilla"arrived in Canada as a Landed Immigrant. At first "Peter" was very nice to "Priscilla", promising a very bright future for them in Canada. Then the abuse started. "Peter" became very controlling. He would not give "Priscilla" spending money but he would not allow her to work outside the family home either. Very soon, the abuse escalated to physical violence. "Peter" incessantly accused Priscilla" of having affairs with his friends and other people.

When their first child was born, "Peter" became more abusive. He would desert "Priscilla" and the baby for days on end, with no food in the house. On one occasion, after a bout of illness, "Priscilla" phoned one of "Peter"’s friends in desperation and in tears, to beg for food. She and the baby had not been feeling well for days and hadn’t eaten. When "Peter" returned home and saw the groceries his friend had brought for "Priscilla" and the baby, he demanded to know who bought the groceries. "Peter" became irate and accused "Priscilla" of embarrassing him by calling his friends to beg for food. "Peter" expected "Priscilla" to cook for him, serve him and clean up after him even when she was ill.

"Peter" would often disconnect the phone, telling "Priscilla" that they didn’t need a phone. During these times, "Priscilla" would be totally isolated, with no way of contacting anyone for help. "When money became increasingly scarce for the family, "Priscilla" convinced "Peter" to allow her to take a three month janitorial course against his will, so that she could find a job to supplement "Peter"’s income. Upon completing the janitorial course, "Priscilla" exchanged phone numbers with fellow graduates for job search purposes. "Peter" would always be "really mad" when "Priscilla"'s colleagues called with job leads. He continued to accuse "Priscilla" of having affairs behind his back.

When "Priscilla" became pregnant with their second child, she developed complications with the pregnancy. "Peter" alleged that the baby was not his baby. He would often tell "Priscilla" that she had committed adultery, which was why she developed complications with the pregnancy; that God was punishing her for committing adultery. After the birth of the child and to this date, "Peter" has continued to allege that the child is not his child. One night, "Peter" woke "Priscilla" up after an exhausting day and demanded that she tell him the truth about the child. He constantly refers to the child as "Priscilla"’s child and not their child.

In the year 2000, "Priscilla" was involved in three consecutive car accidents. However, she continued to work at her job as a janitor, while going through physical therapy for injuries she sustained in the car accidents because "Peter" expected her to pay half the bills. He would take the rest of the money from "Priscilla", leaving her with no spending money. When "Priscilla" became pregnant with their third child, she developed more complications and stopped working. Her family became concerned about "Priscilla" and sent "Priscilla"’s mother to live with her and "Peter" in Canada, so that she could assist "Priscilla" with the children. "Peter" again disconnected the phone, isolating "Priscilla" and her mother. "Priscilla" and her mother had no phone for more than a year. They had no friends either, as "Peter" would often become verbally abusive to anyone who attempted to befriend "Priscilla" or her mother. "Priscilla", her mother and the children would often go without food for days, because "Peter" would spend his money on only himself.

While in Canada, "Priscilla"’s mother became very ill. However, "Peter" refused to assist "Priscilla" with her mother’s medical expenses. He constantly accused "Priscilla"’s mother of stealing from him. As "Priscilla" was now without a job, she was forced to incur a large debt to pay for her mother's medical expenses. When her mother's medical condition deteriorated, "Priscilla" borrowed more money to buy a ticket for her mother to return to "Priscilla"’s country of birth, where she could be close to the rest of "Priscilla"'s family.

Two weeks after "Priscilla"’s mother arrived in "Priscilla"’s country of birth, she died of her illness. "Peter" was unsupportive and bragged that "Priscilla"’s mother died as a result of a curse he put on both of them because she stole from him. "Peter" continued to call "Priscilla" a prostitute and often told her that she was fat, ugly and she stank. He continued to prevent "Priscilla" from having contact with anyone.

After "Priscilla" travelled to her country of birth for her mother’s funeral, "Peter" shipped all her belongings and those of the children, intending to abandon and trap them in "Priscilla"’s country of birth. When it was time for "Priscilla" and the children to return to Canada after her mother’s funeral, she discovered that she didn’t have sufficient funds for the tickets. "Peter" had taken out all the funds "Priscilla" received as settlement for the car accidents she was involved in, in the year 2000. She and the children were trapped.

After living in Canada as a Landed Immigrant, "Priscilla" had now attained Canadian Citizenship. However, "Peter" incessantly told her that she didn’t belong in Canada; that she and the children were too stupid to be Canadian citizens. By this time, the passport belonging to one of "Priscilla"’s three children (all born in Canada) had expired. When "Priscilla" attempted to renew the passport at the Canadian Embassy in "Priscilla"’s country of birth so that she and the children could return to Canada, she was told by Embassy Staff that the child’s passport could not be renewed with just "Priscilla"’s signature; that the father’s signature was required to renew the passport. Embassy Staff insisted on having "Peter"'s signature, despite the fact that "Peter" intended to make it impossible for "Priscilla" and the children to return to Canada.

"Priscilla" became desperate when she realized that one of her children could not return to Canada because his passport had expired (even though he is a Canadian citizen). "Priscilla" phoned her husband in Canada to beg him to renew their son’s passport in Canada in order for her and the children to return to Canada. However, "Peter" became verbally abusive and told "Priscilla" that he didn’t care about what happened to her and the children; that he was going to teach her and the children a lesson by abandoning them and making it impossible for them to return to Canada, the only home "Priscilla"’s children have known. When "Priscilla" realized that her husband’s intentions were to strand her and the children, she borrowed money from a friend and bought a one way ticket to Canada. She needed to return to Canada so that she could renew her child’s passport herself.

With the help of an agency that assists women in abusive relationships, "Priscilla" has now settled into her own apartment. However, she doesn’t have sufficient funds to buy tickets for her children who are still stranded in a land foreign to them. It will cost about $6,000 for "Priscilla" to be reunited with her children, who currently reside with "Priscilla"s family in a strange land to the children. "Priscilla" is feeling very desperate and she misses her children. The children miss her.
