LEARN AROUND THE CIRCLE
PROJECT
The LEARN AROUND THE CIRCLE PROJECT is a
variation of LEARNING CIRCLES and a personal
initiative of M. Akulia, a Vancouver based SOCIAL
JUSTICE ACTIVIST and LEARNING CIRCLE
FACILITATOR. LEARNING CIRCLES
facilitated and led by M. Akulia are modeled after the Kakwa tribal tradition for families
to circle around the open LOG FIRE after evening
meals, to share quality time, knowledge and countless "likikiris"
(stories and folklore passed down from generation to generation)
before bedtime. As this has been a very effective method for
M. Akulia to attain knowledge and wisdom personally, she
has continued to use it extensively, in
many projects geared towards raising awareness about and
finding solutions to SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES plaguing
the human race, locally and globally, through
the LEARN AROUND THE CIRCLE PROJECT. M.
Akulia is working on a book project which chronicles a very
unique life that begins in AFRICA, with
the heroine's dream to become a GLOBAL CRUSADER as a
GIRL CHILD and ends with that dream becoming a
reality, when a number of "very strange" life
circumstances and "twists of fate" bring her to live
in NORTH AMERICA.

EXCERPT FROM
THE BOOK PROJECT BY M. AKULIA
"Cynthia" and her extended family
often sit around an open log fire under the bright moonlight and
blue sky, after the family's evening meal. Family members take turns
in mimicking Kakwa elders by telling countless "likikiris" (stories
and folklore passed down from generation to generation by much
respected and revered clan and tribal elders). During visits by
and/or to her grandparents, there are always more "likikiris", which
are always of better quality. The
grandparents always seem to have more stories, wisdom and knowledge, which adds a distinctive
characteristic and quality to the "likikiris" told by "Cynthia"'s
parents and younger extended family members. "Cynthia" always looks forward to the quality time spent
around the open log fire with her extended family and never tires of
repeated "likikiris". She always hungers for more "likikiris"
and finishes the evening meal in a hurry so that she can find a spot
around the open log fire that will ensure that she hears and absorbs
the knowledge and wisdom contained in every "likikiri" that is told.
She sits wide eyed with anticipation as everyone goes quiet and a
family member begins a "likikiri" with the usual "......, kaju
'bero, ikana....." (a long long time ago, in the land......). She,
along with other family members enjoy being involved and
participating in the "likikiris". They also enjoy singing the songs
that would often accompany the "likikiris". "Cynthia" soaks and
absorbs every single word, the lessons and wisdom contained in
stories about animals, human beings and a world that existed a long
time ago, before the great grandparents of the Kakwa tribe.
