LEARNING CIRCLES:  A TEACHING METHOD REVISITED - SPEAKER:  MARGARET AKULIA

As part of AFRICA AWARENESS WEEK at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, CANADA (MONDAY, JANUARY 26, 2004 - FRIDAY, JANUARY 30, 2004), M. Akulia, a Vancouver based SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVIST and INITIATOR of the LEARN AROUND THE CIRCLE PROJECT revisited a centuries' old method used for teaching, disseminating information and imparting knowledge in cultures around the world.  M. Akulia discussed the concept of LEARNING CIRCLES and walked participants through her own variation of LEARNING CIRCLES modeled after the Kakwa tribal tradition for families to circle around the open LOG FIRE after evening meals, to share quality time, knowledge and countless "likikiris" (stories and folklore passed down from generation to generation) before bedtime.  The presentation included participation in a LEARNING CIRCLE led by M. Akulia herself.  As this has been a very effective method for M. Akulia to attain knowledge and wisdom personally, she has  continued to use it extensively, in many projects geared towards raising awareness about and finding solutions to SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES plaguing the human race, locally and globally, through  the LEARN AROUND THE CIRCLE PROJECT.  You can read about the project and a book project by M. Akulia by clicking on the appropriate links at the bottom of the page.  A definition of a LEARNING CIRCLE as offered by BRITISH COLUMBIA'S OPEN LEARNING AGENCY can be found on the SPONSORED EVENTS page.
